Hello there!

Are you looking for a day trip in Switzerland but doesn't want to spend the whole day driving around? Then this post is right ro you

Let's go to Landwasserviaduct

I have to admit. Instagram made me go to Canton Graubunden that autumn day of 2020. I saw so many beautiful pictures from viaduct that I had to saw it mysef (beautiful scenario no matter what time of the year are you planning to go). Weather was perfect and it took me about 2h with the car from Zürich to the parking lot nerby (if you take public transport search for Alvaneu Bad, Solas).

Parking lot is located about 10min walk from viaduct. There are planty locations where you can enjoy the view and also take a great pictures. I decided first to go all the way to viaduct. I looks like a very tall masterpiesce.

The viaduct was built between 1901 and 1902 as part of the extension of the Albula Line. It was designed by the Swiss architect Alexander Acatos and the engineer Charles Sigrist.

One of the most striking aspects of the Landwasserviaduct is its masonry work. The viaduct is constructed using local limestone, and its six arches are each 20 meters in width. The use of local materials not only adds to the viaduct's aesthetic appeal but also helps it blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The Landwasserviaduct is immediately followed by the Landwasser Tunnel, which is 216 meters long. The combination of the viaduct and tunnel allows trains to navigate the challenging terrain of the region. It is situated in a picturesque setting, surrounded by the Swiss Alps. The viaduct spans the Landwasser River and is often photographed with the backdrop of the surrounding mountains.

The Albula Line, including the Landwasserviaduct, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation acknowledges the exceptional engineering and architectural achievements of the railway line, which harmoniously integrates with the natural landscape.

Due to its unique design and scenic location, the Landwasserviaduct has become a popular tourist attraction. Many visitors come to witness the trains crossing the viaduct and to capture the breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps.

Enjoy your trip to Landwaserviaduct, it doesn't really matter, what time of the year you're going, it's always beautiful <3
