The Seealpsee is best known for its stunning natural beauty and is a popular destination in the Swiss Alps. Located in the Alpstein mountain range in Switzerland, Seealpsee is a picturesque mountain lake surrounded by majestic peaks and lush alpine meadows. The reflections of the surrounding mountains on the clear waters of the lake create a breathtaking and serene landscape.
Hiking is a common activity in the area, and there are several trails leading to Seealpsee, making it accessible for visitors who want to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Swiss Alps. The Alpstein region, where Seealpsee is situated, is known for its diverse flora and fauna, adding to the appeal of the area for nature enthusiasts.
Here you can find two different hiking paths:
WASSERAUEN - EBENALP - ÄSCHER RESTAURANT - SEEALPSEE - WASSERAUEN
Let me take you on a hiking adventure that happened after the wild year of 2020. As soon as travel became possible again, my friends and I made a decision to explore the scenic beauty of Appenzell Innerrhoden, specifically a place called Seealpsee. Our journey began with a two-hour train ride to reach the cable car, which would take us further to Ebenalp. (Train plan: link to train plan)
The weather didn't seem promising when we started, so we made a spontaneous choice to skip the long hike and head on a shortcut towards Seealpsee instead. Little did we know that this decision would lead us to the Äscher Restaurant.
The Wildkirchli caves were used by hermits and monks seeking solitude and spiritual retreat. The natural caves provided a peaceful environment for contemplation. You can find a small altar near the guesthouse that was built in the 19th century after the location gained popularity among hikers.
After a short coffee break, we continued our trek towards Seealpsee. As we arrived at the lake, the weather miraculously improved. The view was absolutely breathtaking, and despite the slightly chilly water, we couldn't resist the temptation to take a dip. Having lunch with such a magnificent view felt truly priceless.
The path took us back to Wasserauen. All together, it took us about 3 hours, and it was absolutely worth it.
Remember: This path can be really steep and dangerous. Expecially after raining. As always I recomend good hiking shoes.
WASSERAUEN - SEEALPSEE- WASSERAUEN
This hike took place last year. We started at the same point, but this time we hiked all the way up to Seealpsee and then back to Wasserauen. Shortly after the start, you can choose if you want to take the shorter service road or the longer mountain trail that goes through the forest. If you have small kids and strollers, I definitely recommend going on the service road. For others, like us, you can make a loop by taking the mountain trail up and the service road down. It's not possible to go with the car all the way to the lake.
By the lake, you can find a few farms/cottages that offer fresh milk and cheese. The most popular ones are Gasthaus Forelle and Berggasthaus Seealpsee. I haven't been to any of them; usually, when I go hiking, I personally prefer to take something small with me.
So after a short break and the whole loop around the lake, we went back to Wasserauen, taking the other way - the service road. Some bloggers are saying it's easier to walk on this path. I personally didn't like it because it was very steep and with concrete; knees can really hurt. But in terms of safety, it can be much safer than the other, especially after the rain.
Either way - there is another trail I may do this year? Who knows. The best time to go hiking is from late spring to early autumn. So if you haven't been there yet, take that backpack and let's go!!
Enjoy <3
